Guam has a highly connected and progressive telecoms sectorIn terms of fixed broadband coverage, Guam is one of the most connected states/territories of the USA. It also has a well-developed and competitive mobile market with around 100% mobile penetration and 3G/4G mobile technologies available.

However in terms of fixed broadband speed, Guam is behind most other states in the USA. Efforts are underway to resolve this issue with GTA rolling out a fiber-to-the-neighbourhood service over the past year or so, which should provide 40,000 homes with access to higher speed services by the end of 2016.

Infrastructure and economic activity on the island in general is set to increase in preparation for a planned military personnel relocation due to take place in 2020.
While some Pacific Islands are yet to embrace the digital economy; examples of initiatives involving either fixed or mobile technologies are beginning to emerge from Guam. An e-health initiative, for example, is underway in Guam where an online billing system is being implemented into The Guam Memorial Hospital.

Despite its small size, Guam’s telecom market is highly competitive, with three major companies providing both fixed line and mobile services; of these, two also compete in the pay TV market. The fixed-line leader is the incumbent GTA, while in the mobile and pay TV market, the leader is Docomo Pacific. Several minor companies provide services primarily to corporate customers.

The island of Guam is a territory of the USA; its residents are US citizens, and its military installations are some of the most strategically important US bases in the Pacific.

Guam has one of the most advanced telecom systems in the Pacific region, with international connectivity ensured by no less than nine major submarine cable networks. As a result, Guam is considered a telecom hub, a nexus between the USA and Asia.
A planned acquisition of GTA by PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom) was cancelled in July 2016.

In 2016 DoCoMo Pacific announced it would deploy a new undersea fibre-optic cable system.
The major players have conducted a number of mobile network upgrades across Guam in recent years, including introducing HSPA+ and LTE technologies.

Mobile and digital economy initiatives are emerging in Guam.
In 2016 a mobile app was launched in Guam which would allow customers to arrange transport with drivers.
